The government has been warned against interfering with school curricula since the institutions are handled by professionals.

In a statement that seemed to target Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, Masaba North KNUT branch assistant secretary James Oteki termed the move to ban mock exams in secondary schools as ‘trying to change a culture that is part of the system’.

Speaking at Nyakongo Secondary school on Friday, Oteki said the mock exams were part of the culture in the country and warned the government against constantly interfering with education matters.

“We have a good reason why we subject our children to mock exams and that is to boost their confidence. The government has no role to dictate education issues especially those affecting our learners,” he said.

Mr Oteki said the branch will not change its position and vowed to defend school administrators who want to continue with the system of mock exams.

“On this one, we will stand with school management and no one can abolish mock exams. The exams have previously proved helpful and is why as KNUT, we will defend it to the bitter end,” he added.

The government had on Thursday announced stiff actions against regions that may be found culpable citing that the exams were promoting social unrest in various institutions.
