The Director of Green Belt Movement Aisha Karanja has disclosed that preparations to hold the 4th anniversary in honour of late environmentalist Wangari Maathai have been completed.

He urged members of the public to avail themselves at Karura Forest, Kiambu County.

Speaking at Karura Forest, Kiambu County after inspecting the preparations of the anniversary, Karanja said that her organisation will continue to address the environmental challenges affecting Kenyans.

“We will continue to protect environmental challenges to ensure Kenyans have better environment,” said Karanja.

“We will continue planting trees throughout the nation to enhance the Green Belt Movement approach and advocating for environment conservation,” added Karanja.

Karanja also said that the organisation will support community mobilisation.

“We are engaging local community at Karura Forest by encouraging them to form groups to help in environmental conversations,” said Karanja.

She added that they will involve local residents in adopting clean and renewable fuels and technologies to mitigate the effects of destruction of environment.

She also said that they are encouraging youth and women to grow tree seedlings and planting trees to arrest the effect of environmental degradation.

The Green Belt Movement (GBM) is an environmental organisation that empowers communities, particularly women, to conserve the environment and improve livelihoods.

GBM was founded by Professor Wangari Maathai in 1977 under the auspices of the National Council of Women of Kenya (NCWK) to respond to the needs of rural Kenyan women .

Maathai was renowned as a fearless social activist and an environmental crusader and died in 2011.
