A night guard has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Naivasha court after he was found guilty of nine counts of robbery with violence.

David Letira was found guilty of robbing a group of foreigners of their personal effects and cash totalling Sh5 million by Naivasha chief magistrate Stephen Githinji.

His co-accused, David Odhiambo, was however acquitted by the court due to lack of enough evidence. The two had been charged that on March 13 2011, they raided Sirocco House in Naivasha while armed with a gun and other weapons. The two then robbed the foreigners of their various personal effects.

In his ruling, the magistrate noted that the first accused was found in possession of some jewellery and a mobile phone which had been stolen from the victims. He added that the accused was positively identified by some of the victims who saw him during the attack.

In mitigation, Letira said that he was a father of four children who depend on him and sought leniency from the court.

The court, however, declined the leniency plea and jailed Letira.
