Members of the Kisii community have been urged to discard Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as a way of initiation from childhood to adulthood in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
In an interview today with a US-based Nongovernmental organization’s Chairperson Gladys Itueka, the region was one of the areas carrying out FGM, urging the locals to know the initiation was old age and should be avoided at all costs.
Itueka further said they have been holding sensitization campaigns across the region and Kenya as a whole, adding that they are getting a positive response from the public over the same.
The chairperson added that they need all parents to shun the practice, since it robbed the girl child the right to privacy, and in many cases caused deaths when giving birth.
Gladys lauded the support they have so far received from both the national and county government in their campaign which is 'bearing fruits'.
According to Itueka, the practice had outlived its relevance and had no actual and scientific bearing in determining the maturity or reining infidelity among women.
