Students from Gusii Institute of Technology have called upon the institution management to consider recruiting people with proper training to man the main gate of the institution.
Speaking on Sunday at the institution, the students accused the management of recruiting people with little skills on matters security, putting the lives of over 1,000 students in the institution at risk.
They gave the management an ultimatum of up to two weeks to reconstitute the entire security personnel through competitive means.
“As students here, we are really worried every day especially at night. Most of our security guards are untrained, they cannot appropriately deal with a serious security issue. We have already notified the management and they have two weeks to rectify the situation,” said Mr. Trevor Okoth.
According to them, reconstituting the security personnel will not only increase the confidence of students on matters security, but also help in reducing the current wage bill incurred on individuals already working as guards.
“We have so many people who are just paid by standing in the school compound. Most of them are relatives of the staff members here and I think if they recruit competent people, we can manage security by using very few individuals,” added Catering student Dan Manage.
However, the institution’s head of security Peter Momanyi denied the claim that most guards lacked relevant skills to combat insecurity.
“We have relevant staff, trained and equipped and I think the students are misled. Our officers have gone to class some even have Diplomas in matters Criminology and Security related matters,” he said.
