Hawkers in Kisumu cashed in on the huge number of visitors who thronged the lakeside city to attend the 89th edition of the Kenya National Music Festivals.

Some of the traders who spoke to Hivisasa said that throughout the event that started on August 3 to August 12, they have managed to sell goods that would have taken more than a month.

“I have run out of stock on five occasions in the spam of one week, and this is not something that happens on a normal day. I am just happy with those who brought the festivals to our town,” said Morris Okoth.

The business was further boosted by the different venues that various categories were being hosted giving many hawkers a chance to specialise on one area to reduce competition.

The music festival was held in six different venues; Christ is the Answer Ministries (CITAM) Kisumu, Lions High School, Kisumu Boys High School, Kisumu Girls High School, Aga Khan Hall and the Lake Primary School.

Vendors who benefitted most are those dealing in food items.

“Most of the time the participants were in need of snacks and there was time limitations that could not allow them to get food, so we came in handy and that really boosted our business," said Owen Okumu a hawker.

While the hawkers have been celebrating their sales, there have been complaints over the past few days of increased littering in the city.
