Thieves of litter bins in Nakuru town have been warned to stop the vice or else they will be arrested and prosecuted.

The stern warning was issued by the county’s Director of Health Murithi Kiogora after it emerged that the shortage of the bins had been occasioned by theft.

He said efforts by the county to keep the town clean had been hampered by lack of waste bins as residents have a hard time disposing of their litter.

“We have been installing litter bins only for the thieves to steal them. We have information that the bins are being used as scrap metal. We will not keep chasing after thieves, that is not our work. Our work is to serve Nakuru residents,” warned Kiogora.

He said the county has incurred great losses and added that plans are underway to educate the public on the importance of environment conservation.

“We will soon begin educating the public on the essence of conservation. That way we will be able to contain the spread of diseases,” said the health director in his office.

He also added that the bins are bought using taxpayers money and that it was wrong for a few individuals to steal them for their own selfish gains. Kiogora also noted that they are hunting down the thieves in an effort to keeping the town clean.
