A 42-year old herdsman was on Monday sentenced to four years imprisonment by a Nakuru court after he was found guilty of stealing three cows valued at Sh160,000.

Joseph Githungi was slapped with the jail term after admitting he committed the offence on April 7 2014 at Mirangine area in Nyandarua County.

“The offence can attract up to a maximum of 14 years imprisonment but the court, having considered the investigations conducted by the prosecution and the accused being a first offender, leniently sentence the accused to four years in prison,” said resident magistrate Mary Otindo during the ruling.

When he took his plea on April 8, Nyaga pleaded guilty to stealing the animals which he was found selling in Laikipia County.

The court heard that Nyaga was seen selling the cows to unknown people before a villager rushed and informed the owner, John Kamunge.

Nyaga, as the court was told, had been left to look after the cows when the owner went to oversee his business activities at Bahati in Nakuru.

Kamunge, allegedly, was not around at the time his stock was being sold.
