Parents who have children with hearing impairments in Thika West Sub-County have urged the Kiambu Government to employ sign language interpreters for their kids.
Speaking on Tuesday during Mashujaa Day celebrations, Joy Town School parents and teachers association chairman Moses Wainaina said such children are misunderstood at social places due to poor communication.
He said such children are treated unfairly in social places as majority of people don't understand their languages.
Wainaina said the Kiambu government should employ sign language interpreters to aid communication at police stations, hospitals and places of worship where the children may keep off.
"We indeed require the county government to employ language interpreters to enable us fit other normal people," he said.
Margret Mwende, a board of governor’s member has called on the public to treat children with such impairments with utmost understanding.
Mwende said most of the children do not have the assistive devices, which poses a challenge to the treatment they receive from the people around them.
The parents have urged the county government to help them procure a diagnostic audiometer to test the hearing levels of such children to place them in the right schools.
