A man was imprisoned for three years by a Machakos court on Tuesday for breaking and stealing goods worth Sh2,700 from a house.

Paul Owino pleaded guilty to the charge before the Machakos Principal Magistrate Catherine Obara.

The court was told that the incident took place at Chakoli village, Uika location in Yatta sub-county where he was working as a house help on the night of August 9 and 10, 2015.

While delivering judgment, the principal magistrate said that the court had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the accused had stolen the property.

She urged members of public to engage in income generating activities instead of engaging in petty thefts adding that such thefts are on the increase in the Machakos areas.

She noted that it was important that deterrent measures are put in place to discourage would be offenders.
