Kikuyu Member of Parliament has urged youth in Kikuyu to join the National Youth Service (NYS) that was launched in the area by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking in his office on Wednesday, Kimani Ichung'wa said youth in the area should take advantage of the programme that was launched and come out in numbers to be part of the project.
He said the programme was launched in the area to enable youth to engage in productive activities and shun idleness and criminal activities.
The MP pointed out that most of the youths who had engaged in unlawful acts were those who had lacked employment hence end up enganging in crime as the final option.
Ichung'wa said the programme was launched in order to bring change among the youths in the area and they should hence show their appreciation by taking part in it.
"As the MP of Kikuyu, I was delighted when our President heard the voice of the youths in Kikuyu and launched the programme in the region. However, we have an obligation to show that we are grateful by coming out in large numbers and joining the programme so as to curb idleness and unemployment which lead to unlawful acts," said Ichung'wa.
The MP said youth associations in the region should campaign for this programme and urge youths to join the NYS to become productive rather than being idle and falling victim to illegal activities and drug addiction.
