The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) wants the national government to strengthen institutions mandated to fight corruption in order to effectively fight graft.
Speaking to journalist at a press briefing in Eldoret town on Friday, Uasin Gishu CIPK chairman Sheikh Abubakar Bin told the government to allocate more funds to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for them to fight graft effectively.
The Imam raised concerns over rising graft in government.
Sheikh Bin said the fight against graft must be fought fiercely in order to protect public resources.
“The government must increase funding to the EACC and the DPP in order for them to effectively fight graft,” he said.
The Sheikh noted that the two independent officers are underfunded making it hard for them to pursue and deal with corruption.
The Uasin Gishu Imams leader at the same warned against plots by some politicians to disband the EACC.
He said attempts to disband and cripple EACC will slow down the fight against corruption.
The Sheikh said independent institutions are protected by the constitution and that politicians should stop interfering with their mandate.
Sheikh Bin supported calls by US President Barrack Obama to the Kenyan government to fight corruption.
He said concerns raised by Obama in regard to corruption in Kenya are serious and must be addressed.
During his visit in the country last week, Obama asked the government to fight graft saying that the US government will offer its help in eliminating corruption.
