Industries in Athi River town, Machakos County have been cautioned against violating National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) laws and regulations thereby exposing their employees to health risks.
Speaking at her office in Athi River town on Wednesday, nominated MCA Veronica Mutivo, said most of the companies in the region are notorious for violating NEMA laws.
"Industries in Athi River and its environs should stop violating NEMA laws and instead obey them for the best interest of their employees who they expose to health risks," said Mutivo.
Mutivo said all the industries should provide their workers with protective gears as stipulated in various legislations so that they do not get harmed.
"Factories should give all their workers protective gears so that they do not get injuries and disease such as chest diseases," said Mutivo.
Mutivo said some of the industries whose workers had raised complaints over the laws violations include cement, steel and flower farms from the region.
She said as the Justice and Legal Committee chairperson at the Machakos County Assembly, she would take a motion in the assembly soon for a special committee to be instituted to investigate how factories from Athi River town and its environs handle their workers. This will enable the house come up with policies to regulate the industries on human resources management.
