Residents of Nyabondo village in Nyamira County were left in shock and surprise when a three-day-old infant resurrected as it was about to be buried.

According to the residents, they had prepared a grave and were only waiting for the coffin in order to bury the remains of the infant, before one of them realised the child was breathing.

Questions emerged on how the infant was pronounced to dead as some blamed incompetence among the nurses who gave the report that the child had died.

“We had secured a burial permit from area chief and taken the remains from Omboga mortuary and what was remaining is burial because even the grave was ready. It's the aunt of the deceased who realised the child was alive when we were about to lay the remains,” said Erick Okemwa, a neighbour.

The medical superintendent for Nyamira hospital, Silas Ayunga, said a step would be taken to the nurse who recommended that the child had died which according to him, only a doctor had mandate to certify if the child was death or not. He apologised to the family of the child for the pain.

However, Ayunga said the mother had premature birth at home and she brought the baby to hospital when she realised it had problems.

“We apologise to the family of the child and assure them we will take an appropriate action to the nurse who performed the examination and recommended that the child has died,” said the hospital officer.

He added, “The mother delivered at home at seven months of pregnancy and the infant weighed only 1 kg. When she came to hospitals our doctors examined the newborn and realised it had cardiac complications. It was then taken to newborn units,” said Ayunga.

The baby was, however, pronounced dead last evening while in hospital.
