Nyanza Regional Commissioner Francis Mutie on Thursday warned against holding protests in Kisumu city in the guise of protesting against rising insecurity.

Mutie said such protests are meant to destabilise the peace the lakeside city residents have been enjoying.

He said those participating in the protests were being misled by politicians and urged them to volunteer information that can lead to address the issue.

Mutie said civil society groups should also not pay youth to protest noting that fighting insecurity should not be a preserve of police alone.

“Before you go to the street to protest, visit our offices, share with us the concerns you are raising then we debate and find a solution,” he said.

Nyanza regional police boss Willy Lugusa said police in Kisumu have done a commendable job to tame insecurity.

Lugusa announced that six hardcore criminals were arrested over the weekend and have already been charged.

He said Kisumu was safe and assured the residents and visitors visiting the city not to panic.

“This is an assurance am giving as the head of police in Nyanza region that Kisumu is safe. Forget about the negative media reports, police is on top of things,” he said.

The two were speaking after chairing the Kisumu County security meeting.
