Kisumu county government has been challenged to set aside resources for health educational forums in colleges to increase awareness on health issues.
Killen Omondi, a human rights activist in Kisumu speaking on Tuesday morning at Huduma Centre, called upon the county government to initiate programmes for school going students' empowerment on health related issues saying that most of the youth overindulge in unnecessary actions that would ruin their lives.
To him most of the health talks and community health education needed to be funded by the county government and making sure the college students were engaged to participate in such programs to improve health standards amongst peer groups.
He further challenged youth to have moderation in every activity they engaged in saying it was a stage they needed to pass but needed to act maturely and moderately.
“We seek upon the county government to uphold the health standards of its locals by making sure every individual can access, voluntary counselling and testing, especially college students. This would act as the gauge on ethical behaviours’ that would keep their lives safe.” said Omondi.
Kisumu county gender sociologist Florence Atera further noted that it was very important for college students to have frequent health seminars by health practitioners and constant guidance and counselling.
Atera said that much needed to be done in creating awareness for students and locals to feel free to attend health talks organised for them.
