The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) wants the National Assembly to enact laws empowering the authority to prosecute police officers acting unprofessionally.

The vice chairperson of IPOA Jedidah Ntoyai said that despite the fact that they have received complaints from the public, no one has been prosecuted on the same.

"So far we have received 3,246 complaints from 2012 from the public. We got them through our offices, post office, phones and website among other places. It is sad that only 141 cases have been settled. If we could be given powers to arrest and prosecute police officers, the cases could have been finished like yesterday," she said.

She reiterated that some of the cases that were reported include death, sexual assault, sexual harassment, misconduct and corruption among others.

"I call upon the director of public prosecution to ensure that cases that are filed by IPOA at his office are acted upon speedily to ensure that the public gets justice on time since justice delayed is justice denied,” she said.
