The Mombasa County government has unveiled modern equipment that will be used to tarmac about 1,000 kilometres of road network.
Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho on Tuesday unveiled Sh115 million of equipment it had bought for the project.
Joho who was unveiling the machines at Treasury Square, Mombasa said the equipment will be used for paving, upgrading and tarmacking of road.
“The road construction will ease traffic in Mombasa. Tarmacking of the roads in the county will ease the movement by both cars and the people,” said the governor.
Some of the equipments bought by the county government are two wheel loaders, two motor graders, two rollers and five tipper lorries which will be used in the improvement of roads in the county.
According to Joho, the roads project will bring down the cost of transport and attract new investors.
“The road network will help business along the road to be competitive and help in growing the county’s economy,” he said.
The governor added that the county government is making plans for construction of a bridge at Likoni Crossing.
“We are looking at proposals of a bridge that will link Mombasa Island to Likoni. For the first time, people will be crossing into and out of the city without ferries.”
He further said that the new Nyali Bridge which is to be constructed before 2017 will connect the island and Kongowea Market and will help the area residents to reach the market easily.
