Seven people have been confirmed dead and 11 others severely injured after a morning accident along the Thika Highway.
The accident occured next to the Witeithie Stage in Juja sub-county.
The accident involved a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) that is alleged to have been speeding after picking passengers at the Witeithie stage. The accident caused an hour-long traffic congestion along Thika road forcing Administration police to intervene and ease movement.
Thika Sub-County traffic police base commander Apelles Chacha has confirmed that the vehicle was overloaded. It was carrying 19 passengers including the driver and the conductor instead of 14.
She said that the driver died and other victims died on the spot. The injured were rushed to the Thika Level Five Hospital where they are nursing injuries.
“Most of the injured are severely wounded. The vehicle was overloaded and speeding and this is a tragic accident like the one we experienced at Blue Post last month,” the officer said.
According to an eyewitness, James Karanja who is a PSV driver along the Thika road, the driver sped and overtook him at Witeithie Stage before he lost control and hit the roadside metal bars claiming seven lives.
Drivers have been cautioned against speeding on the superhighway to tame the accidents that have been claiming lives and according to Chacha, most of the accidents are caused by the PSV vehicles.
