Kiambu County governor William Kabogo has ordered all unlicensed and sub-standard bars in the county to be shut down.
Speaking from his office in Thika on Thursday, the leader castigated the owners of the companies which are believed to have manufactured the poisonous alcohol that claimed the lives of youth in Kiandutu slums.
Kabogo pointed out that the death toll had risen to seven and three more patients are in critical condition but are receiving treatment at Thika level five hospital.
He called for the closure of all sub-standard pubs whether licensed or not and urged the police department to follow up on the matter.
"It’s a sad thing that we’ve lost seven lives due the consumption of illicit brew. We have so far probed the matter and the two companies which are said to have manufactured the alcohol have been closed and their licenses revoked. I also pose the same directive to the authorities responsible to close down all sub standard and unlicensed pubs in Kiandutu to mar further loss of lives," said kabogo.
Kabogo however challenged Kiambu residents to avoid taking cheap and expired alcohol at the expense of their lives.
"Kiambu residents also need to think twice before consuming cheap things. This is a fight that all of us must engage in. If you leave us to fight manufactures while you continue consuming this alcohol, the fight will not end any time soon," said Kabogo.
He further directed that all who are believed to have taken the alcohol be taken to Thika level five for free medical check-up.
