Kiambu County government is increasing efforts to ensure the county sustains its population with farm produce.
Governor William Kabogo, on Wednesday, said agricultural activities in the county should and can support the people without having to resort to donations.
The governor was speaking while addressing the county assembly on the state of the county saying that in the last two years, great emphasis has been on training farmers to increase productivity.
He added that the government has constructed 60 greenhouses in all the sub-counties. The greenhouses have been acting as demonstration centres for farmers where more than 1,500 farmers have been trained on crop management.
Kabogo added that 20 more greenhouses have been purchased and are waiting to be installed in all the wards to ensure equality in the distribution of resources.
He lauded the introduction of stevia growing in the county saying that it will help curb unemployment problems.
“Stevia promotion and growing has been initiated in Kiambu County. Stevia cuttings have been provided to 120 farmers from the upper highland areas of Githunguri, Lari, Limuru, Gatundu North and Gatundu South,” he said.
Kabogo noted that there is increased milk production saying that the agricultural sector has embarked on value addition which will fetch better market prices for the farmers.
