The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and Kiambu County government were the main topic of discussion over increased counterfeit products circulating in Juja bars.
Residents, bar owners and some leaders accused the county government of failing to identify the counterfeiters while licensing them. Kebs was, on the other hand, reprimanded for failing to be hard on counterfeits in the markets.
Witeithie MCA James Gichuru and area Assistant Chief James Nyoike said that the two bodies are affected by laxity and corruption. This, they said, has allowed the supply of counterfeits by rogue business persons.
They called on Governor William Kabogo to ensure that those being licensed for any kind of business only sell genuine products.
Gichuru said that the law enforcers too should be involved in the fight against counterfeits too to ensure they are tamed completely.
The leaders were speaking in Juja Sub-County on Thursday where they approved over 37 bars in Witeithie area. They rejected 13 bar operators saying that they had no medical reports while others had not attained the required qualifications.
The owners will return to the vetting committee later.
