Youths in Kemera area in Nyamira South Sub-County have been called upon to venture into rabbit rearing as a form of self employment.

A farmer in Kemera area who has been keeping the rabbits for more than 4 years now Douglas Rayori said that rabbit keeping has been his saviour after looking for a job for more than 2 years without any success.

Rayori added that since he ventured into rabbit farming, his life has changed drastically since there is a high demand for the rabbits in both the local and international markets and this has made their prices to rise over time.

He further noted that when he started, a young rabbit would go for as little as Kshs. 300 but currently, a young rabbit goes for Kshs. 700 while a matured rabbit goes for Kshs. 3000 depending on the size.

“Most youth are looking for white collar jobs which may not be available yet they can venture into rabbit keeping," he said.

Rayori confirmed that he has been selling over 15 rabbits in a month and this has been sustaining him and his family.
