Elderly people from Kitutu Masaba have a reason to smile after well-wishers from United States of America took over a project initiated by former MP Mwancha Okioma that had stalled in Gesima Ward.
The group of well-wishers led by Daniel Onsomu took over the project after intensive negotiations with the former MP.
The project is expected to take at least seven months before it is ready for occupation and is estimated to host 150 aged people.
Mr Onsomu on Sunday said 20 people from the US had owned the project and details on its operations will be made public once construction is over.
“We have already held discussions with Hon Okioma and he has given us a go ahead. We expect that construction is completed in the next seven months and subsequent occupation for intended purpose. The twenty of us will thereafter give guidelines to the same,” he said.
Mr Onsomu said the project will see people over 80 years old and above given first priority depending on their current economic status.
“Of course we will give priority to people over 80 years depending on their social status. It will be an open recruitment exercise with no discrimination,” he said.
He said a committee will be constituted that will oversee operations in the new old age people’s center which is also expected to recruit workers.
“There will be a local committee in place to oversee the operation here and we expect that they will recruit manpower. We will only do the supervisory role and monetary support of course,” he added.
