Hundreds of traders from Keroka town have been warned to be careful about people purporting to be workers of Nyamira County government.
This comes after revelations of counterfeit receipts allegedly given by people purporting to be tax collectors from the county government.
But on Thursday, MCA Ben Sironga, who chairs the county committee of trade, said the county leadership was in the process of automation revenue collection to fight the vice that has been ongoing for some time now.
“We have been receiving complaints and the county government is aware. Some people have been using receipt books that resemble those of the county government without the traders knowing. That is why some of your receipts have been cancelled,” he said.
Mr Sironga urged the police from Keroka to take actions against the imposters who have been defrauding residents and charge them with fraud.
“The county government is in the process of automating cash collection and that is why I want you to give them some little time. However, the police should take an action against fraudsters who are even making the county lose a lot of revenue,” he added.
According to Sironga, he will sponsor a motion that will make the county government liable of the illegal activity hence having victims compensated by not paying for subsequent compliances.
