Chief Peter Kariuki Macharia of Kiamaina Location has called on residents to ignore the Catholic Church's stand on polio vaccination and have their children vaccinated.
Speaking on Monday at Kiamaina Shopping Centre in Bahati Sub-County during a meeting convened by the provincial administration on the awareness of the polio drive, Macharia urged parents to let their kids have the life-saving vaccine.
“I urge parents to allow medics vaccinate their kids against polio. It's a deadly disease that has been responsible for physical disability among young children," said Macharia.
The public awareness comes in the wake of remarks by Cardinal John Njue of Catholic Church who has protested over the polio drive questioning its safety.
The protest by the Catholic Church is the second after the same church opposed a tetanus vaccination drive last year saying that the vaccine was laced with birth control hormone.
Macharia noted that Kiamaina Slum has many disabled people and wondered why the church is opposed to the vaccination drive.
The administrator accused the church of undermining the government's effort to eradicate polio.
“The government has made strides in the fight against polio but Catholic church interference may erode the gains achieved in the fight against polio”, said Macharia.
He thanked those parents who have embraced the exercise and urged more parents to let their kids vaccinated .
The vaccination drive kicked off on August 1 and will continue to August 5 in the first phase while the second phase will commence from August 29 to September 5, 2015.
