Youth in Kiambaa have been urged to practise safe sex in a bid to curb the spread of HIV/Aids and other sexually transmitted infections.
Addressing youth at the PCEA church grounds on Friday where she supplied free condoms to the youth, Ms Rachel Omondi, a medical officer from Kiambaa Hospital, said that the number of youth dying in hospital as a result of HIV/Aids has gone up.
Omondi said most youth fear visiting health centres when they get infected with STIs as a result of the mentality that society members have when it comes to the topic of sex.
The medical officer said sex was a reality that the society needs to accept and urged residents to help the youth learn about sex.
Omondi said sex education programmes should be rolled out in all counties as majority of the youth lack the important information and knowledge hence end up messing up their lives.
The officer said the young generation fear pregnancy more than sexually transmitted diseases, which is a very dangerous trend.
She advised youths to practise safe sex and also urged them to visit VCTs to know the status of their partners before engaging in sex.
"The youth of today need sex education as many of them end up being buried by their parents as a result of diseases which we can prevent. That is why I have started this programme that will be held once every month, just to educate youth on sexual issues," said Omondi.
She said a large number of youth revealed during her interactions with them that they do not get any advice from their parents or guardians.
Omondi urged parents to play a role in educating their children about sexual issues especially when they become teenagers.
