Bodaboda operators at Rumathi and Kika areas in Kiambu have been put under surveillance after being identified as a security threat by Kiambu police.
A special crime intelligence unit has begun monitoring the motorcycle operators over alleged claims of engaging in criminal activities to the extent of terrorising their own clients.
The operators have also been said to harbour illegal groups like Mungiki sect members.
Kiambu OCS, Sebastian Lekupe, who spoke during a sensitisation meeting with the operators at Makadara gardens on Thursday, said there have been complaints from the area residents against the operators.
“The government will not sit back and watch insecurity cases increase as criminals purport to offer public transport services,” he said.
The OCS said that some operators have been robbing their clients while adding that others have been transporting illegal merchandise around the area.
"You need to avoid these activities and instead work with the police to smoke out all unscrupulous elements among you who are involved in illegal activities," he advised.
Kiambu traffic base commander, Gabriel Mulei, said it was the responsibility of the operators to ensure that they have reflective jackets, helmets licenses and other requirements needed to conduct legitimate business.
"I really sympathise with some of you who because of dishonesty find themselves being jailed for years," he said.
He said every area will be zoned for identification purposes to ensure theft cases can be easily traced to specific individuals.
“We will have serial numbers put on the mud-guard of every motorcycle to show the area it belongs to in order to differentiate it from other areas,” Mulei said.
Kiambu Sub-County Community Policing Chairman, Raphael Chege, asked the operators to report any suspicious characters among them to the police.
