Kiambu government has so far spent Sh31 million to set up modern greenhouses in to enhance food security in the area.

Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries CeC, Dr Monica Waiganjo revealed that already 60 farmers' groups drawn from various parts of the county are undergoing an intensive training program on how to manage and reap maximum benefits from the greenhouses.

She said that the greenhouses which were released to the farmers groups immediately after they underwent a special training program by trainers from KARI have registered positive results saying most of them have started selling their products in the market.

She said that the farmers have already been linked to value addition chains and markets to ensure that their harvest gets to the right outlets fast enough and payments done without unnecessary delays.

“If the structures that we have put in place succeed, Kiambu greenhouse farmers will no longer suffer exploitation by middlemen. So far they have started reaping the fruits of their labor as we have linked them to chain stores and supermarkets where their products are bought at a very competitive price,” she said.
