The county government is set to distribute the medicines to all the health institutions across the county.

According to the Health Chief Officer (CO) Stephen Njuguna, the drugs are coming after the first disbursement of the drugs worth Sh11.6 million earlier.

The officer decried the shortage of essential drugs in the area but absolved the county government from blame saying that there are no funds now.

Njuguna said that the county government is also set to increase the number of maternity wards at Kiandutu Level Four Hospital among other hospitals to reduce the distance travelled by expectant mothers to other health facilities.

He said that the county government will purchase more chemicals and equip the current laboratories with modern gadgets.

The CO was speaking on Tuesday at the Thika Level Five Hospital where he flagged off distribution of drugs to Thika and Gatundu health centres which were handed over by Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (Kemsa).

He warned some medics who were known to smuggle drugs that they would not be spared since the public cannot suffer at the expense of a few individuals out to enrich themselves.

Dr Andrew Toro received the drugs and lauded the move saying will help the hospital deliver quality services.
