An elderly woman was on Tuesday arrested in her house in Runda by police from Kiambu Police Station for allegedly kidnapping and selling children out of the country.
The woman aged 62 has been on the wanted list for about one and a half years now after she was suspected to be conducting the illegal act.
She is said to be using young women to conduct the kidnappings. She is said to have kidnapped over 260 children and sold them to Tanzania, Uganda and Burundi.
Confirming the incident, Kiambu OCPD Mr Stephen Ng'etich said that the woman has escaped arrests four times stating that she has been residing in Tanzania since she was announced wanted.
Ng’etich revealed that police were tipped of her presence by a resident in Runda who knew of her criminal acts. He said that the woman had arrived in Kenya a day ago and she intended to pick over 25 children said to be kidnapped and then transport them to Uganda.
Nge'tich said that the woman works with about 75 people in five counties, including Kiambu County which is their main target.
He said the other four were Murang'a, Embu, Bungoma and Kakamega. He revealed that during the arrest, they were able to recover fake documents in her house including fake birth certificates and photos of about 35 kidnapped children that police suspect were to be transported out of the country.
"We have arrested the suspect thanks to the help of a resident who suspected the woman. Investigations are underway and justice will prevail at the end of it all. In the past two years, cases of kidnapping have been a menace and we had information about the suspect that's why we have been hunting her," said Ng'etich.
He thanked the cooperation of residents by reporting the suspect saying that it helps in fighting illegal activities in the society.
