Elected women leaders in Kiambu County have been urged to support development programmes aimed at uplifting the welfare of residents.
Speaking in Kikuyu town on Saturday, area Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation chairlady, Rehab Kehebu expressed concern that women were being left behind in terms of development.
Kehebu faulted elected women’s leaders in the county for failing to support development programmes in the region meant for women.
“Elected women’s leaders ought to work together and support worthy development programmes being undertaken in this area,” she said.
Kehebu noted that women are important players for the development of society and all leaders must take their interests to heart.
She called on women leaders in the county to step in and work together in steering the region towards development and urged all women to be pro-active and seek representation in all development programmes being undertaken at the county level.
She further urged them to seek leadership positions at the county government, saying that leadership was not a preserve for men.
At the same time, Kehebu said that women have the potential of making exceptional leaders adding that time had come for the country to elect a female president.
The Maendeleo ya Wanawake area chairlady further appealed to the Kiambu County Assembly to initiate and implement laws that will support women’s empowerment programmes.
