The Langata sub-county public health department has said the department is prepared to counter effects of the El Nino rains when they begin.
This is according the sub-county Public Health Officer Dr Charles Warutere who cautioned residents be on alert.
He said there was a likelihood some waterborne disease could emerge during the El Nino period.
"We have identified Kibera DC health facility as a treatment centre for any peculiar or extra ordinary diseases that may arise due to El Nino," he told this writer on Wednesday.
"We are on alert because in Kibera, there likelihood of outbreak of cholera, and typhoid."
He spoke at the sub-county headquarters.
"We have pit latrines all over in Kibera and there is high possibility that water will be contaminated thus putting the residents' health at stake," he added.
"We advice the public to report immediately to the facility in case of any symptoms."
The residents have also been warned to take precautions so as to minimise the chances of disease outbreaks.
"People should practice good sanitation by boiling drinking water to the required boiling point, hand washing, and avoiding open defecation. As we continue organising ourselves, we shall be able to distribute water treatment chemicals just as a control measure," he added.
