As the world marks the World Youth Day, Kibera and Langata youth leaders are mobilising youths to exploit and capitalise on their abilities and to embrace government projects aimed at lifting them economically.
The Chairman of Langata Youth Network Mr Daniel Orogo, who is leading the initiative, asked the youth to engage in the various projects launched by the government to empower themselves economically.
He noted that there is an increase in radicalisation of the youth and warned them to reject any efforts targeting to radicalise them.
“The Youth especially in slums can do better than what they have achieved so far. As we mark this day, the message that should be clear to the youth is to avoid being duped into radicalisation. There is a lot we can still do to our respective communities especially in Kibera,” said Orogo.
“The government has tried so far to engage the youth in various projects such as slum upgrading programme. This project spearheaded by the National Youth Service is a project that is meant to benefit us all and, therefore, should not be politicised,” said Orogo.
Kibera MP Ken Okoth has also advised the young people to take advantage of any opportunity that comes their way however little it may translate in terms of income.
According to the MP, savings is a sure way of investment for the youth who are focused. “We should not be too choosy when it comes to jobs. Let us do whatever job that comes our way as long as it is legal.
“Our young people should embrace saving so that they can be self reliant,” said Okoth.
