Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Director Dr John Kibosia has urged the national government to help kidney transplant patients by subsidising their drugs.

Kibosia said that after surgery, most of the patients find it hard accessing the drugs which help them kidney ailments.

Speaking at a press conference at the hospital on Thursday, Dr Kibosia said that the cost of maintenance after a patient has been operated on is expensive and only well-to-do people can afford it.

"The cost of buying drugs after a kidney transplant is approximately Sh30,000 per month and one has to take the drugs for a lifetime. Since most drugs are imported from India, I urge the national government to at least to reduce the price of drugs by half for patients to access them since majority of them are unemployed putting their lives in danger," he said.

He challenged Uasin Gishu residents to ensure that they carry out kidney tests at least once to ensure that the kidneys are working well to avoid surgeries.
