Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has reiterated that he will continue conducting funds drive in Luoland saying it will benefit residents.

Kidero said harambees will not divide the community but would rather empower the locals’ by helping them fund joint initiatives.

He said those who are against harambees want the community to lose out on funds from philanthropic people who hail from the region.

“Our people cannot wallow in poverty and attempts to raise funds to pull them out of this situation are resisted,” he said.

The Governor said those who are privileged to have should give to the less privileged in the society.

Speaking on Friday in Masogo/Nyangoma Ward in Muhoroni Constituency during a funds drive in aid women groups in the area, Kidero said he is ready to conduct "as many harambess as possible" in Luo Nyanza.

Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma who was present also faulted those who are against harambees.

Ranguma said some leaders have moved to the National Assembly and the Senate to ban harambess noting that such legislations will not succeed.

“Some people from this county have moved to Parliament to ban harambees, I want to tell you that it will not succeed,” he said.

He said the art of giving is a personal decision and should not be banned.

Nyangoma/Masogo Ward Representative Samuel Ong’ou said women groups in his ward will benefit from a fund run by the Kisumu County Women representative.

Over Sh3 million was raised during the funds drive.
