Kiganjo Landlords Association (KLA) chairman has told off Kiambu Governor William Kabogo over his recent public announcement that landlords in Kiambu County will start paying taxes this financial year.
Speaking on Thursday in his office, James Karanga who heads the Kiganjo, Thika based association said that Kabogo is just testing the waters to see their reaction before deciding whether to tax them or not.
"He can be very sure that he will be met with hostile opposition. If we start paying taxes, then we are going to pass the burden to our tenants, majority of whom are his voters," said Karanga.
Karanga noted that there is no legislation in place that dictates the amount landlords should pay to the government.
"That is why I am saying he is testing the waters because he doesn't want to come up with an unpopular legislation," he added.
Governor William Kabogo made the announcement on Wednesday while giving out tanks to women groups in Ruiru.
The governor said landlords, just like other businessmen, will pay taxes adding that the county government needs to widen the tax revenue bracket in order to be able to finance infrastructure and service delivery.
