Nakuru County assembly speaker Susan Kihika has asked the county government to set aside funds that will help disabled children access education and other services.
Speaking at Barut Primary school in Nakuru on Friday, Kihika said that children with disabilities have been abandoned and are being mistreated.
She said that having a special kitty for such children will help the access education and other necessities.
Kihika observed that many children living with disabilities have been abandoned and are locked in houses and homes.
She said that children with disability have the rights just like other children.
“It is disturbing to hear that some parents and guardians lock their children who are disabled in homes without food and care,” she said.
Kihika said that the constitution protects the rights of every child. She asked parents and the society not to discriminate against children with disability. She also asked members of the county assemblies to formulate laws that will protect the rights of disabled children.
She also called on well-wishers to come to the aid of such children to enable them access education and other opportunities in life.
Kihika urged other persons living with disabilities to seek services from the government. She said that the government recognises the worth of disabled people and has put in place programmes that will help them get services.
