In a bid to curb unemployment among the youth, the youth department in Kikuyu Sub-County has set up an entrepreneurship programme aimed at educating youth and helping them acquire business skills.
Speaking in his office on Monday, the deputy youth officer Zacharia Kariuki said the department had set aside a programme aimed at helping the youth acquire entrepreneurship skills.
He said the programme is aimed at educating youth on the importance of self employment as many youths rely on white collar jobs and when they fail to get them, they end up being jobless and some start engaging in criminal acts.
Kariuki revealed that despite their office being opened for members of the public, quite a small percentage of youths visit the office for any entrepreneurial advise.
"We want to urge all the youths in the area to be part of this programme that is aimed at helping them. The programme will commence on Saturday the July 11, 2015 at the Kikuyu chief's camp and it will run up to Tuesday July 14, 2015. However, this mostly targets youths in Kikuyu town as the programme is aimed at visiting all the areas in the sub-county and educate the youths on the same," said Kariuki.
He stated that the programme will enable youths to bring forth their agendas concerning business and the youth will also be educated on Uwezo Fund as not many have enquired about it.
Vincent Njenga, who owns a car wash business in the area, said the youth department is of great importance as he got great advise and guidance from the department.
He said the idea of his business came from the advise he was given five months ago.
Njenga said he has now employed two more youths in his business and he intends to employ even more when the business picks up. He encouraged his fellow youth to attend the forum.
