The County government of Kisii might now be forced to pay up the debts incurred by the defunct local authority’s Municipal, county and town Councils that add up to Sh970 million if a report by the Transition Authority (TA) is proved to be true.

This was said at a meeting in which the Transition Authority gave a report to the county government officials on the wealth and the assets the county government owns, and also the debts the county took over from the non-operational local authority councils.

Speaking during the meeting organized by the Transition Authority on Tuesday, Kisii County Assembly Speaker Kerosi Ondieki said that it was good for the county government to know its assets, adding that if the report is proved to be true, then the county will have to pay the debts inherited from the local authority.

“We have been shown the debts we have, which are almost a billion from all the municipal councils that were under Kisii County. We have lawyers, contractors who had begun working on roads and had to stop because of not being paid. And tomorrow we have public participation to help us recover everything and have a new start,” said Kerosi.

The meeting will continue on Wednesday, where public participation will also take place to help the county identify the grabbed county property such as land, buildings and vehicles.
