The ongoing debate on the legitimacy of Harambee between the two leading coalitions CORD and Jubilee might take a new perspective after a section of MCAs from Kisii County demanded that the DP William Ruto make his wealth public.
Speaking at Sameta Ward on Monday during a meeting with education stakeholders, the MCAs said defended the Harambees but criticized the way they were used for political reasons.
They criticized the DP for allegedly using Harambee to woo people from opposition strongholds besides calling for anti-corruption to investigate him.
“I am not really convinced with the way he (William Ruto) is using harambee to score his political goals. He has been dishing out millions weekly and that is questionable. KACC should investigate him and come up with the truth. We want to know how someone is able to contribute weekly such amount of money,” said Kiogoro MCA Samuel Apoko.
His counterpart from Bombaba-Borabu Koina Onyancha asked the DP to desist from luring voters from opposition areas by dishing out money that could not be accounted for.
“I really want to know why somebody would come to opposition strongholds with money that cannot be accounted for. Harambees are avenues for corruption and this is what Jubilee regime is perpetuating,” he said.
This comes a moment after opposition leader Raila Odinga exchanged fiercely with Deputy President William Ruto over the manner in which he (DP) contributed to fundraisings around the country.
The DP had visited Siaya County and was later joined by President Kenyatta at Kisumu County where they contributed to a fundraiser for various churches in the region.
