The Kisii County Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) branch has said that the ongoing teachers’ strike will continue for as long as their pay is withheld.
Protesting along Kisii streets, the teachers said they would sustain the strike until their demands are met.
Branch executive secretary, Shem Nyaundi, led the teachers in the peaceful demonstration to reinforce the current industrial action.
He said the teachers would compel the employer to heed to their grievances by staying put even for a longer period.
“Learning in private schools will not be allowed to continue since the teachers and children are related to the striking teachers who are fighting for their rights,” they threatened.
Nyaundi claimed that teachers would retreat to their homes if the employer become adamant.
The nationwide teachers strike entered its third day as the parties involved continued to duel. As the teachers took to the streets, learning remained paralysed in all public primary and secondary schools.
“Kenyans must be given the right directions. According to the Supreme Court, the Sh17 billion (required to pay the teachers) is ours” said Nyaundi.
The teachers who carried placards vowed to remain put until there are paid their dues.
Some of the placards read “Kaimenyi and Rotich should resign” and “Bring laptops we sell for our upkeep”.
