An undisclosed number of part-time lecturers in Kisii University have been relieved of their duties following mounting pressure from students over failure to attend to their routinely lectures.
Speaking on Wednesday at his office during reception of two US-based computer science lecturers, vice chancellor John Akama said the lecturers in question had been subjected to the senate for a number of occasions to explain why they periodically miss lectures only to give unsatisfactory answers.
He reiterated the commitment of the institution to hire more tutors to satisfy the exponential growth of student population which is currently estimated to be 15,000.
“Kisii University believes in quality education and all lecturers must adhere to the required standards to meet our mission and vision," the university boss said.
"The management has dismissed quite a number of part-time lecturers and their actual number will be revealed. They had been summoned to senate for a number of occasions and failed to justify students’ complaints,” Akama said.
The renowned tourism and hospitality don said the institution will soon announce the recruitment process of qualified lecturers who will take the vacancies that have emerged.
“We do not have enough tutors and the institution is willing to get more to cover up the emerging vacancies. We will soon recruit more to satisfy the rising population of students.
Last semester, at least 10 lecturers we subjected to senate committee and warned against failing to submit results within the stipulated one month period besides being cautioned against issuing handouts to students to avoid going to classes.
