Kisii University vice chancellor Prof John Akama has condemned tribalism among university students and encouraged first year students to cultivate unity amongst themselves.

Speaking to first year students at the University's sports ground on Friday, Prof Akama urged the freshers to shun tribalism since the institution is diverse. While he encouraged cultural groups that represent every Kenyan community, he strongly warned against making inciting statements that may divide students. "We allow cultural groups in this university, but they should only be used for positive exchange of culture. This university should make you humble citizens who will not overlook any community," he said.

Tribalism has been witnessed during student elections.

Professor Akama welcomed all the new students who were admitted for the September intake. According to the academic registrar, Prof Philip Owino, about 3,000 students had been admitted this year.

He added that the university has also received requests by students from other universities who want to join the institution.
