Students will now be able to study medicine at Kisii University as the university opens its first medical program.

According to Vice Chancellor John Akama the university will admit its first batch of medicine and surgery students in this next academic semester after the finalization of its agreement with Kisii Level Five Hospital late last year.

“There has been a good growth in the University and we thank the Kisii county government for pushing for the upgrading of the hospital into a teaching and referral facility. This will boost the number of graduate doctors from the current 600 to 2,000 per year in the country," said Professor Akama.

The university's School of Health Sciences started in March 2010, initially offering diplomas in clinical medicine and medical laboratory sciences.  Now it has advanced to offer Bachelor degree in biomedical sciences, nutrition, community health, public health, nursing and clinical medicine have since been introduced.

The hospital through the help of the county government has 550 beds, a daily workload of 900 outpatient attendance and 200 admissions.

“As the KCSE exams will be released we will be able to select students to join the university and carry out their medicine courses from here and from the Kisii level five hospitals,” added Akama
