Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof John Akama has defended himself fiercely about the violation of a court order that was issued in 2013 over the illegal termination of the then deputy principal academic affairs Prof Silas Ngari’s contract.
Prof Akama and chairman of the council, Sebastian Mwarania, were again served with a court order dated August 20 by a Nakuru judge Helen Wasilwa in which they appeared on Tuesday.
However, Akama and his chairman of the council, who faces up to six months in jail for court contempt, denied any wrongdoing and urged the former deputy principal to sue the Ministry of Education.
“The chairman and I were wrongfully sued by the embattled scholar since we do not employ or dismiss members of the management. Further, I have come to learn of the court order recently since I wasn’t served with the same for two years now,” he said.
Akama said the university had been awarded charter by the then President Mwai Kibaki and all employees were supposed to renew their contracts in line with the law.
“The institution was upgraded to the university status by President Kibaki and all members of the management were required to renew contracts since we were working on five years under the Transitional Act before the elevation. Therefore, we are not to blame for his woes,” he added.
He promised to honor the latest order by the judge and said he will defend his reputation over the alleged contempt of court.
