The Kenya Airports Authority is set to build a cargo facility at Kisumu International Airport to facilitate transportation of goods.

Kisumu Airport Managing Director Joseph Okumu said the construction of the facility is expected to commence soon.

The cargo terminal is meant to facilitate food security and economic growth in Nyanza, Western and parts of Rift valley region.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, Okumu said the facility will be put up under a private partnership with various investors both local and foreign.

He said the tenders had been given out with some yet to be awarded.

Okumu said the facilities to be put up include transit sheds, park houses and cold houses.

He added that they are expecting big air cargo upon completion of the facility.

He said some of the products expected to be exported through the facility are flowers, fish and vegetables among others.

“We still have more space and we appeal to potential investors to take advantage of the available opportunities at the airport,” Okumu said.

He said currently Eldoret Airport is the only one with cargo facilities in Western Kenya region noting the entrance of Kisumu Airport will open various business opportunities.

“The facility will enhance food imports and transport to various destinations that will boost the regions income,” Okumu said.

The facility will boost Kisumu County’s plans to export farm produce to improve revenue collection.

Governor Jack Ranguma said the county was keen on transforming itself from a consuming economy to a leading exporter this financial year.

He said the county plans to start exporting meat to the regional markets as well as farm produce.

“We have so much potential that if tapped well can lift a lot of residents out of poverty in the coming months,” Ranguma said. The Kenya Airports Authority is set to build a cargo facility at Kisumu International Airport to facilitate transportation of goods.
