Youth who were enlisted in the National Youth Service in Kisumu have expressed hope that the project that was recently halted will resume soon.
A representative of the youth from Obunga, John Okello said many youth were worried that the project might not resume.
Okello said they have received information from the Kisumu Central MP’s office and that of the NYS that in October 12, the programme will roll out again.
He castigated some youth who had alleged that MP Ken Obura had directed them to demonstrate against some leaders who are not happy with the project.
“The youth were a worried lot over the fate of the project. I can confirm here that we have received reliable information that the project will kick off again soon,” he said.
Addressing a press conference in Kisumu on Thursday, Okello said the issue of NYS should not be politicised as it is helping many lives in the lakeside city.
George Otieno from Lower Kamakowa, blamed some youth for accepting to be used by politicians to propel their agenda.
Otieno said NYS youth are eagerly waiting for the start of the programme and would not wish to engage in other political activities.
“Some of our youth went to the media and alleged that we were planning a demonstration in town to protest against some elected leaders. That is propaganda meant to taint the name of Ken Obura,” he said.
