Residents of Obunga slums in Kisumu, mainly those who were enlisted in the National Youth Service projects held demonstrations on Tuesday in support of Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru.
The team suspended the ongoing works in the slums armed with placards and twigs to take part in the demonstrations.
Addressing the press after the demonstration, Robert Omondi said the project has been a milestone in the lives of the slum dwellers who were contracted in the programme.
Omondi said many youth who were idle and prone to indulging in criminal activities are now benefiting from the project.
He said the issue of the purported scandal in the ministry should not be politicised, but investigation is allowed to be carried out.
“Politics is taking over this issue but we wanted investigators to come up with a clean report,” said Omondi.
Omondi added that the project should not be suspended owing to the alleged scandal, noting that a number of youth who have been earning from the project will be rendered jobless.
Another demonstrator Agnes Achieng praised Waiguru for the good work she has done in the ministry that allowed the youth to earn a living weekly.
Achieng said they are not interested in the politics taking shape in the ministry, and will continue working in their various stations.
“I have been washing clothes in the slums but since the project came, I have been earning well every Friday and I will resist any attempt to suspend this project,” said Achieng.
