This comes a day after a 10-years-old boy was rescued after drowning and two cows that he was taking care of reportedly died.

But on Sunday, Riamoni location Chief Francis Rasugu declared the pond, which is on government owned land ‘dangerous’ and warned residents from using its waters until the rains subsidize.

Rasugu said the government will take stern action against those who defied his order and hinted that they will be subjected to community work for over two months.

“This water pond is very dangerous this rainy season as much is it is important for our livestock. You already know the dangers and therefore no body will be allowed to access it till the rains subsidizes,” he said.

“I have elders on the ground and whoever will defy the order will definitely face the law. The government has an obligation to protect the lives of its citizens. I have plenty of punishments for those who fail to comply including community work,” he said.

Area residents supported the directive by terming it ‘fundamental temporary remedy’ that will be used to avert unprecedented deaths.

“This announcement is quite timely and on behalf of our people, I would like to thank the chief so much. We have to take precautions for such untimely deaths,” said Evans Mokua.
